Lowry Ruins

June 14, 2010 -- Located 27 miles northwest of Cortez, Colorado Lowry Pueblo Ruins make for a quite side trip in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.
The pueblo complex was constructed about 1060 AD atop previous pithouse occupations.
When I visited the site I was the only one there but the BLM has placed some picnic benches, a small intertriptive trail, and restroom facilities.
The pueblo has the foundations of extra large kiva much like those found at Aztec National Monument and other structures.
There seems to be quite a bit of reburied sites. The initial excavation was accomplished in the 1930s.
For more on Lowry Ruins visit the BLM of Colorado's site on Lowry Pueblo.
