June 8, 2011--I've been dying to get out on and do something since my knee reconstructive surgery in January. It’s been a slow recovery and I don’t do slow very well. After a long day of yard work my dad and I both looked at the mountain and spontaneously decided we really needed to climb Waterfall Canyon just east of Ogden. Sometimes the best hikes are spontaneous.
After changing shoes, grabbing some gear and stopping at the local convenience store for some LaffyTaffy to motivate my six year old hiking buddy we made it to the trailhead up 24th Street in Ogden.
The trail quickly connects with the Bonneville Shoreline trail and parallels an exercise trail for about 20 minutes. It’s all pretty flat and has great overlooks of the Ogden skyline.
Soon we found ourselves heading east up the canyon. The actual trail follows the creek down the mountain and due to popularity it is pretty moderate.
Before we knew it we were under the spray of the 100+ foot waterfall. The fall itself is pretty impressive and the views through the canyon are surely worth the hike.
What a great way to start the summer hiking season.
Summary: 3 mile hike to a great 100+ foot waterfall
Time: 2 hrs 30 minutes (with a six year old)
Difficulty: Moderate
